Chapter 7

It was getting cold. Too cold, and far too fast. You couldn’t even fend off your shivers from the safety of your green blanket. But What could you do? “Why even try to fend it off, I’m going to be dead and in a boiling pot soon,” The only problem was you didn’t know how soon. A taunting snowflake had led an army into your room the other day, but none of them last long, inside or out.

Normally your definition of “Winter” was when the first snowflake fell, whether it stuck or not… But obviously that wasn’t Jack’s interpretation. He must be going by the set date of when fall ended and winter began “December 21,” you shuddered as the words took some of your warmth with them. It was too cold for this. You tugged the cover closer to your person, trying to hold on to every bit of warmth you had.

“I-I need a calendar or something,” you muttered to the air. “What day is it… what day is it!” your eyebrows furrowed as you tried to remember what day it was when you were captured, and how long it’s been since then. Then again, you had no idea how long you’d been out when you had hypothermia… “This is useless!” you growled. “Stop being such a grouch, we need to plan!” You glanced up to see a David in a thick, orange winter suit and other precautions against the cold.

When had he gotten here?

“David, be quiet, Jack might h-hear you,” You leveled with him, he simply waved you off, “Eh, he’ll get over himself, and he’ll get over having lost his dinner as well.” He joked, hoping to bring you to higher spirits. To no avail… He almost growled, “I can’t believe you’re actually letting that guy get under your skin so easily,” he stated and, suddenly, you felt warm, rage’s flame were heating you up.

It took all you had to avoid not yelling at the top of your lungs, “Easily!? You don’t have the smallest smidge of a clue of what I’ve been going through! Don’t you say anything at all that makes me vaguely think about thinking you think you know how I fucking feel!” you snapped. David frowned, “You use to be so bull headed, refusing to do anything anyone told you!” he reminded you. You panted, puffs of crystalized breath leaving you like a pissed off bull. “Now look at you, lying on your back, waiting to jump through any hoop to get your belly rubbed,” he growled right back. You shook your head so hard it hurt. “You’re right… but you’re a bitch!” you huffed and turned your back to him. David retorted, “You’re really starting to piss me off! You’ll roll over for your killer but not listen to your savior!” To which you turned to him, making a sound of frustration that rivaled eyeless Jack’s growls.

David actually paled slightly.

You panted heavily into the cold, offering it your warmth in turn for its coolness to calm you. “David, you are my killer!” was all you said and turned away from him again. David released a breath and there was a thin sound of something colliding with metal before he spoke. “I know… and that’s why, when I get you out of here, you’ll never see me again,” Your eyebrows rose toward the ceiling and you turned around fully to get a look at him. His head was against the bars and he waded in such a solemn aura; it seemed to tint the snow in his back ground a gloomy grey.

Did he mean that?

You had assumed he’d take you back with him after he got you out. “What?” Daivid’s fingers gripped the bars in a display of self-infliction. “I… I’m a monster, no better than the one planning to eat you… I should never be in contact with human beings, especially you. I keep hurting everyone I get close to. Everyone I care about… You… Your mother….” His voice had regressed into such a mousy whisper; you were forced to crawl closer to the window to grasp the last piece of his words.

Your eyes widened impossibly. “You heard him wrong! You heard him wrong!” You screamed at yourself. But you couldn’t help it… you had to ask….

“My… mother? What happened to my mother?” That tone of yours, it was in that sickeningly shaky pitch you seemed to have gotten used to…David peered up at you. His heart throbbing in discourage. “I…” he bit his tongue as he trailed off. Should he tell you? Would that make his problem harder? He shook his head to deter the thoughts.

You needed to know.

“You mother and I used to date,” he started. He trained on the dried smudges of blood upon your wooden floor. The remains of his closet friend. “It was after your father had left…” He seemed to dread the very day.

He just sat there, staring into the distance. Ignoring the cold, ignoring you, ignoring everything. He had been shoved back in time to relive the torment he’d caused as a cosmic justice. You felt your heart cowered in the back of your torso. “What happened?” you forced in a far more steady tone.

He gave what could only be expressed as a chuckle while running his fingers through his brown hair. He tilted his head, allowing you a peak at the crazed look upon his features. “Don’t ask such a stupid question… you can tell what happened can’t you..?” He coaxed. Your eyes watered and your neck drooped under the weight of the truth. “She— She found out… And you sold her,” you barely leveled your head to see his reply. He gave a nod, his previous grin fading into a rueful frown. “Yeah. Kid. I’m sorry—“

DING!

He was cut off by you grabbing the articles of clothing poking past the bars and slamming his useless head against the unforgiving metal that denied you freedom. You were snarling like a feral animal. You could just feel the spittle dripping down your chin. This Man. No, this monster, needed to die. You pulled harder, pressing his throat against metal. He made a pitiful whistle as the air fled his crushing lungs. Your chest rose and fell. It wasn’t enough! You pressed your feet onto the wall and started extending them in a shaking motion.

More! Those voices cheered. You extended your legs more and almost purred as the clear cracks and snaps came from his bones. His ribs were breaking. Your veins pounded with ferocious animosity and adrenaline. This was it! You pulled more and more, extending your legs further and further. You creaked open an eye to watch David’s skin fade into his snowy back ground. Yes…

I need more! Just a little more….

“Why? Why do you need more?” You paused. This voice wasn’t like the others: Arrogant, persuasive and independent. This one sounded like you… “Why do you need so much more?” You looked at the dying man. You…. You were… “You were about to kill him” The voice spat the word with such venom it made you feel ashamed for even trying to concoct it. You looked down at him, your arms losing tension. You could hear him gasping for the chilly air.

He hadn’t even resisted you….

The clouds in your mind rolled away and your stiff fingers pounded as you released the fabric of his coat.

“I’m… sorry,”

David pulled from the window, hand upon his chest as he panted vigorously. He had been ready to die…

David’s face slowly regain color. “Thanks,” Is all he said to which you didn’t respond.

“Now, We need…” he crumpled into the snow, “F-fuck,” he panted, “Those broken ribs are no joke,” he huffed out. You gazed on with uncaring eyes. You didn’t care about hurting him. You just felt bad for almost killing him. However, a reaction was roused out of you when you watched the snow be tainted a crimson. You jumped up, “David?” His shoulders were shaking. Had one of his broken lungs pierced something important? You watched as he lifted his head to reveal his chaotic grin with blood lanced between his teeth. He’d been laughing.

“Thanks,” was all he said again, but it didn’t sound like David… More like a mixture between a grunt and a hiss. It rose mounts upon your goose bumps. He was still rattling with giddy chuckles, his pupils dilated, seemingly on command. Just as fast as it started… It stopped…

His posture was weak and vulnerable, pleading almost. His eyes were forlorn and desolate. It was heart wrecking.

That was all the evidence you needed…

David was on the verge of insanity, much like yourself….

He used a hand to brush snow over the red scar he’d made, making sure it was concealed. “Seriously, Kid, we need to think of plan to get you out of there…” he spoke.

You nodded in agreement and leaned against the wall to talk about the ways to get you out.

It would have to be a quick plan since Jack is unpredictable. It had to be during the night since that was when Jack was gone. You pondered the options. “Acid…” You suggested. David frowned “What?” You shrugged “Acid, it’s eat through chains without a trace; it would also leave minimal DNA, Jack can track my scent but he’d lose it in this cold and snow. He doesn’t know my name right?” You looked to David in confirmation... Said male shrugged, “He shouldn’t, I didn’t give one when I sold you,” He reasoned. You nodded. “Then he shouldn’t be able to track us…”

He nodded. So it was all settled. “I’ll try and round up the acid, a ride, money for you to run off with and other stuff, ok?” You nodded. Without a word in departure, David left.

You sighed and curled up tightly into yourself. It was getting so damn cold! You hated it! You seemed to spend your entire day rubbing your toes and fingers to avoid frostbite. Hell, who’s to say you don’t already have it?

You grumbled something and made a cocoon of your covers in a hope to recycle your body warmth.
